Did You Know? 🐑

"Mary Had a Little Lamb" is more than just a catchy nursery rhyme.

It’s based on a true story with a bit of a mystery surrounding its origins.

The tale begins with Mary Sawyer, a young girl from Sterling, Massachusetts, who really did have a little lamb that followed her to school one day. This took place somewhere around 1815, and the lamb’s attendance caused quite the stir among Mary’s classmates.

The poem immortalizing the event didn’t pop up until about 15 years later, when writer and editor, Sarah Josepha Hale, published it in her collection Poems for Our Children. Hale's version of “Mary Had a Little Lamb” is the one we all know today, and she is widely credited as its author. Hale had been a teacher outside of Newport, NH, and claimed to have witnessed the event with one of her students.

But that may not tell the entire story. According to local legend, Hale didn’t write the original lines. A young boy named John Roulstone was the one to actually witness this adorable scene, and was so inspired by it that he wrote the first few lines of what would become the now famous nursery rhyme.

Mary Sawyer claimed that the poem must have been based on her lamb, and that Roulstone had been there and written the original verses. But it’s important to note that Mary's claims didn’t come until much later in her life, when she was 70 years old, and she made money off them. She sold wool from her lamb along with autographed cards referencing the famous nursery rhyme.

It’s also important to note that there was no concrete evidence linking Roulstone to the original poem, or even the poem to Mary’s story, and Hale's authorship stands.

So, was it Sarah Josepha Hale or John Roulstone who originally documented that Mary had a little lamb? And was the poem about Mary Sawyer, or simply a strange coincidence? Did a lamb really follow Mary Sawyer to school at all? Who knows? But whichever version of the story is true, we at least know it’s based on a true event.

AROUND THE VALLEY 🎨

Here are some things Around the Valley we think might be of interest -

Can You Move A Mountain? ⛰️

You can when it’s an art installation, I guess. Washoe County wants the highly-visible-from-the-interstate “Seven Magic Mountains” art installation that sits 10 miles south of Las Vegas along I-15. Their Board of Commissioners approved half a million bucks, aka $500,000, to move the piece, which - not trying to hate on modern art here, but - seems like an awful lot to transport painted rocks.

Prefer to Keep Your Car Un-Stolen? 🚘

Ever sat around and thought, “Hm. I wonder which casino parking lot on The Strip my car is most likely to get stolen from? Well, wonder no more. The top three car-theftin’ Strip properties are:

  1. Circus, Circus

  2. The Strat

  3. MGM Grand

Now, police say the reason for this isn’t due to the casinos or their parking, but because car thieves are looking for certain types of cars that are easy for them to steal and that large parking lots give them lots of cars to quickly scan. And while that makes partial sense, I don’t believe it’s the only reason these three casinos top this list.

It’s just my common-sense opinion, but I’m sure their locations DO have something to do with this. I mean, if you were a car thief, wouldn’t you stick to the outskirts of The Strip? Literally anyone who has driven The Strip would know better than to steal a car from the middle of The Strip, where at so many times of day they are super likely to just get stuck in traffic until the police show up to arrest them.
