TODAY’S WIND DOWN BROUGHT TO YOU WITH

Happy Monday Afternoon, Neighbor!

Do you enjoy watching the Aviators play even in the extremest of temperatures? Or have you been meaning to try a game and see if you find it a fine way to spend a weekday evening, but have just been waiting for the right deal? If you do like the Aviators, or just baseball in general, you can get a steal on a bundle of games starting this month. The Aviators Summer Pass is $99 for 15 games (between July 19th and August 18). That’s less than seven bucks per game, which is pretty dang good if you don’t mind the heat.

Also, I started a book on anti-gravity yesterday. I can’t put it down.

Sorry. It’s International Joke Day. I HAD TO.

Did You Know? 📬

The United States Post Office issued its first general issue postage stamp on July 1, 1847.

This might sound like just another boring date in the annals of postal history, but it marked a significant leap forward in the way Americans communicated.

Before 1847, sending a letter was a bit like navigating a bureaucratic maze. There were no standardized stamps, and postage was often paid by the recipient. Surprise! Here’s a bill in the form of an affectionate letter!

Enter the postage stamp. On July 1, 1847, the U.S. Post Office rolled out two stamps that would change the way mail was done. The Ben Franklin stamp cost five cents and was used for letters traveling up to 300 miles. The George Washington stamp cost ten cents and covered distances over 300 miles.

The idea was simple, yet revolutionary: prepay your postage by buying a stamp and sticking it on your letter instead of sticking your intended recipient with the bill. A pretty good idea that was met with enthusiasm
and a bit of confusion. Would this stamp thing stick (literally or figuratively)? But stick they did. Within a few years, the use of postage stamps became widespread, transforming the U.S. postal system into a pre-pay situation where recipients didn’t have to dig into their piggy banks every time a letter showed up at their doors.

AROUND THE VALLEY 🩅

Here are some things Around the Valley we think might be of interest -

All Star Jam & Hotel California đŸŽ€

If you like your music nostalgic and free-like, there are a couple of things coming up at the Palms later this month (and next month) that might make you say, “Yes, please and thank you.”

The free All Star Jam on July 20th is a true 90s bash, featuring a member a piece from some huge bands of the era and an appearance by The Rembrandts of Friends’ “I’ll Be There For You” fame.

The next month, on August 23rd, it’s Hotel California’s “A Salute to the Eagles” that takes to the Palms’ poolside stage, which might prove a welcome relief to those who wanted to see the real Eagles at the Sphere later this year, but have discovered those tickets have long gone by way of the scalpers and are reselling at twice their original price.

General admission to both shows is free, but you might want to book ‘em while you can.

Siempre J.B.

If you’re looking for a new restaurant to try Beyond Summerlin this week, you don’t have to go any further than the Uncommons.

Siempre J.B. opens on Wednesday, and right now there are still reservations available on Thursday and Friday. (Opening day is booked solid.)

No menu is available yet, but it describes its cuisine as “ambitious new Mexican,” and the last time I had ambitious Mexican, my fajitas came out with a sparkler stuck in them.
