It’s National Day of Joy. This is a day meant to notice those things around us (no matter how small) that bring us moments of joy. 😊

I’m thinking about the abundance of stone fruit and berries sitting in my kitchen right now on which we spent FAR too much money in our store run yesterday.

We also opened a fresh bag of coffee yesterday, which is always a moment of momentary zen, and reminds me of my mom. When I was a kid, every time she would open a new canister of coffee she would bring it to wherever I was in the house so I could smell it, cementing the fact that love is in some way tied to coffee, or in emoji terms: ❤️+☕️=👍

Happiness is contagious.

You’ve probably heard that, but it’s not just a feel-good slogan. It's backed by science.

Basically, it works like this - you're in a great mood and you smile at a stranger on the street. That person, now happier than a moment before, smiles at another stranger, who goes on to compliment a coworker, who feels good when they get home for dinner with their family. Before you know it, your single act of happiness has brightened the day for a whole chain of people you've never even met.

There are even some numbers involved. Researchers from Harvard University and UCSD found that when one person becomes happy, the chances of their friends becoming happy increase by about 25%. Even more impressive, this effect extends up to three degrees of separation (that’s halfway to Kevin Bacon!).

So, just how does this magical spread of joy happen? Well, it has everything to do with human empathy. Humans are naturally empathetic creatures. When we see someone smiling or laughing, our brains mimic their emotions, triggering our own feelings of happiness. It's like an emotional domino effect, and once it starts, it's hard to stop.

What’s more, this phenomenon isn't limited to face-to-face interactions. It also works through social media. Positive posts and cheerful photos spread happiness just as effectively online. So, the advice to watch funny animal vids when you’re feeling blue is actually spot-on.

The downside is, since we are naturally empathetic creatures, it works the other way too. A scowl or a negative remark is also a contagion. So, on this National Day of Joy, remember, if you don’t have anything nice to say… zip it.

Did you happen to notice it rained yesterday? Apparently it did so for several minutes. I only noticed it for about thirty seconds, and it kind of just looked like spittle on the ground. But I now know it was a harbinger of monsoon season, so get ready for the rain!

Copa America ⚽️

If you’re looking for something unique and Beyond Summerlin to do tonight, and you enjoy a good soccer match, there are still tickets available for the Copa America tournament at Allegiant Stadium tonight. But you’ll have to get there quick. The game between Ecuador and Jamaica starts at 3 pm.

You can also see Brazil vs Paraguay Friday at 6 pm, and there’s a quarterfinal at Allegiant on July 6th.

Rockets Red Glare 🚀 

If you’re outside around 9 pm tonight, and you see a rapidly moving object in the sky, for once it’s not 👽. The Noise of Summer rocket is launching from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California tonight, and you might see it on its way out of the atmosphere.

(But it’s okay to pretend it’s a shooting star and still make a wish.)
