TODAYā€™S HAPPY HOURS & EATS šŸ”

Well, weā€™re two days away from the 4th of July, so it can only be burgers. Hopefully, youā€™ve got a grill lined up somewhere thatā€™ll slap a fresh one on a bun for you. But, if not, you can get a pretty good burger at many a restaurant over the next couple of days, some that are on special and some that are Happy Hour staples.

Did You Know? šŸ¦…

The eagle had a long history as a symbol well before the U.S. adopted it.

If you think of the eagle as intrinsically tied to American patriotism, you might want to get in line. Because when it comes to this majestic bird, the U.S. was well behind the times. Long before it was an American icon, the eagle was a global icon, revered by multiple ancient civilizations for its strength, courage, and general badass-ness.

In ancient Egypt, the eagle went almost godly. Closely tied to the sun god Ra, the eagle and its slick white mane symbolized immortality and divine connection, and was seen as a powerful guardian of the heavens.

Not to be outdone by the Egyptians, the Romans also adopted the eagle as a symbol. It was the emblem of their legions, representing the might and invincibility of the Roman Empire. An eagle standard was a symbol of honor and glory, and losing one during battle was considered a grave disgrace. It was kind of like losing the knee of your jeans on a bike ride, a glaring sign that things went horribly awry.

Going on to adorn many coats of arms throughout the Middle Ages, the eagle, or more specifically the double-headed eagle, became a symbol of the Byzantine and, later, the Holy Roman Empire.

The eagleā€™s symbolism even beat the Founding Fathers to America. Native American cultures held this bird in high regard. Tribes, such as the Iroquois and the Lakota, believed the eagle to be a sacred messenger between the humans and the gods, much like the Egyptians.

So, you could say by the time the U.S. adopted the eagle as its national symbol in 1782, it was ripping offā€¦ er, continuingā€¦ a tradition that already spanned thousands of years, and the eagleā€™s reputation was already written in the sky.

AROUND THE VALLEYšŸ“

Here are some things Around the Valley we think might be of interest -

Is Las Vegas Nerdy? šŸ¤“

Do you consider Las Vegas a nerdy city? According to an analysis done by Solitaire Bliss using Google and meetup.com, Las Vegas ranks as the second nerdiest city in the U.S., right after Chicago.

They used the prevalence of things like arcades, book clubs, board game clubs, and fandom events to make this proclamation, and while Iā€™ll grant that a lot of those things do, in fact, good nerds make, this feels like a very narrow definition of the word ā€œnerdā€ to me.

Since they failed to factor in history or the arts, Iā€™m calling a big old shenanigans on these rankings. I mean, D.C. is definitely nerdier than Vegas - thereā€™s literally nothing to do in D.C. but nerd out - and St. Louis is home to the World Chess Hall of Fame, the Pulitzer Arts Foundation AND a buttload of other museums that are nerdy as heck.

I mean, not to knock Vegasā€™s nerd street cred, but come onā€¦ this city is NOT nerdy. And, as a certified nerd, I can say that.

Minimum Wage Hits $12 šŸ’ø

In some inverse news to the cityā€™s rapidly-rising rent and food costs, minimum wage is now $12 in Nevada. The wage increase went into effect on July 1st.
