Bourdain Day, $2 Tacos and Global Beatles Day

We've added an Around The Valley section - hope you like it!

TODAY’S WIND DOWN BROUGHT TO YOU WITH

Happy Tuesday Afternoon, Neighbor!

It’s Bourdain Day, a day to honor food adventurer Anthony Bourdain and all the interesting foods he tempted us to try.

The only restaurant that Bourdain ate at on his food expeditions through the city that has an outpost on this side of town is Lotus of Siam. But, of course, that was the still-shuttered OG location off of Sahara, not the one over here at Red Rock, and there’s a big difference. More on that in “Around the Valley” below.

Also in “Around the Valley,” if you have an uncollared and un-IDed pupper or kitty who gets anxious at firework time, you’ll want to make your way to The Animal Foundation over the next three days.

And it’s Global Beatles Day, so, remember, all you need is love. And maybe a $2 taco or two.

In today's Summerlin City Wind Down:

  • Today's Happy Hours & Eats 🌮

TODAY’S HAPPY HOURS & EATS 🌮

Do you indulge in Taco Tuesday? And what exactly is indulgence when it comes to tacos? Is it three? Four? It’s gotta be more than two, because if you can eat just one taco in a sitting, you’re made of stronger stuff than me.

Anyway, if you want to get your tacos in ample supply tonight, here are a couple of places you can get them for $2 - yes, $2! - along with your Happy Hour, one where they are only on special today and the other where they are a Happy Hour staple.

While they aren’t quite $2, here are a few other places you can get your tacos for a relative steal tonight.

Did You Know? 🐦

Hummingbirds once graced Europe with their tiny, but dazzling presence.

Riding out the rain right here in our backyard.

Today, these tiny avian marvels are found only in the Americas, but a surprising discovery in Germany revealed the oldest hummingbird fossil ever found, turning the scientific community's understanding of these birds on its head.

The ancient fossil - 30 million years old and affectionately nicknamed "Eurobird” - proved that these feathered tinies were once part of the European landscape where they roam no more.

Scientists are still scratching their heads over why they vanished from the European continent completely. One theory suggests climate shifts that made the environment less hospitable for these nectar-loving birds may have played a part. Another speculates that the arrival of new predators or competitors might have forced them to flee.

And they had the ability to do just that. Even today, hummingbirds make some of the most impressive journeys of any bird species, with some hummers making 5,000-mile migrations each year. And since the distance from North America to Europe is only around 2,000 miles by the shortest route, it’s not too much of a stretch to assume their ancient ancestors could cross the Atlantic with ease.

AROUND THE VALLEY📍

Here are some things Around the Valley we think might be of interest -

Lotus Sues Lotus

For those of you who were fans of the original Lotus of Siam and noticed the food at the Flamingo location starting to take a turn before they even opened the location over here at Red Rock, you might be relieved to know that you weren’t, in fact, off your rockers.

Last week, news broke that the whole Lotus of Siam expansion has been quite the debacle. The Flamingo and Red Rock locations were not opened by the original owners, but by their daughter and a friend, and now the parents are suing the daughter and her partners.

Basically, it’s Lotus vs Lotus in a battle that is definitely not what that flower is supposed to symbolize.

Keep Your Pups & Kitties Safe 🎆

Come the Fourth of July, The Animal Foundation sees a rash of runaway pets. Without a collar and ID, these pets can be hard to identify and return to their families. So, this year, The Animal Foundation is handing out free collars and pet ID tags. They’re free and there’s no limit per household, but supplies are limited.

Pickups start at 11 am tomorrow and continues on the following schedule:

  • Wednesday: 11 am- 6pm

  • Thursday: 11 am-3 pm

  • Sunday: 11 am-3 pm
