look up tonight at 7:44pm - Super Harvest Moon partial eclipse
TODAY’S WIND DOWN BROUGHT TO YOU WITH
Happy Tuesday Afternoon, Neighbor!
It’s the Moon Festival, and a special one at that.
If you’ve noticed the sky being rather bright the last couple of nights, it’s because it’s been gearing up for tonight’s moon - a super harvest moon. But that’s not all. Because even the moon likes to start spooky season out with a bang, tonight’s big ole moon will also experience a partial eclipse 🌖, and the less visible part begins here before the moon even comes up.
Once the moon does rise (at 6:55 pm), you’ll be able to see the partial eclipse starting at 7:12 pm. The moon will be most shadowed (over 8%!) at 7:44 pm, and it will be normal again by bedtime. Unless you go to bed before 9:47 pm…
Anyway, it should be hecka cool. Both the moon and the temps. (Below 80 degrees in the seven o’clock hour? Is this Heaven?)
So, you know, don’t forget to step outside.

TODAY’S HAPPY HOURS & EATS 🌖🌕
Along with being a supermoon and a partial eclipse, tonight’s moon is a harvest moon. And that means keeping things fresh.
Now, I think we can all admit that Happy Hour foods aren’t exactly known for their health properties - and that’s not why we get them - but there are a few places you can get (reasonably) fresh foods off the Happy Hour menu.
Here are those places and their (potentially) fresh Happy Hour offerings -
And the full moon loomed over the veggies in the field…
Dom DeMarco’s Pizzeria (West Charleston) - House Salad
Grape Street Café (Downtown Summerlin) - Caprese Salad
Lucille’s Smokehouse (Red Rock Resort) - BLT Wedge Salad
Makers & Finders (Downtown Summerlin) - Avocado Salad
Trattoria Reggiano (Downtown Summerlin) - Caprese Bruschetta
Think vegetables should stay far away from your Happy Hour? You’ll find plenty of indulgent options on our list of Tuesday Happy Hours.
Did You Know? 🦗
Grasshoppers’ ears are on their stomachs.
(And just when you thought these guys couldn’t get any more lovable.)
Well, to be fair, grasshoppers don't actually have "ears" at all. At least, not the same kind we do. Like many insects, they have tympanal organs, which are basically flat, thin membranes that can detect sound vibrations. (And look nothing like the overdramatic membrane in the image above.) In grasshoppers, these organs are located on the first segment of their abdomen, right behind where their legs meet their body.
Why the belly? There are a couple of main reasons. One, grasshoppers have a lot going on - those antennae, those wings, those bulging eyes, those jumpy-jumpy legs - but they’re a bit limited on space. Their bellies are one of the few places they’ve got room for anything. Plus, having their auditory organs neatly tucked on their torsos means they’re well-protected. And effective.
Belly ears are ideal for detecting in-ground vibrations. This makes grasshoppers hyper-aware of their surroundings even while their weird little heads are focused on other things, like smooching or chomping on plants.
That’s why grasshoppers jump when they feel you coming. They basically have built-in alarm systems that proclaim, “Flee. Someone’s about to crush you.”
So, why do grasshoppers often jump toward you when they’re trying to get away? Tune in next Tuesday to find out.
