🥓 Bacon Happy Hours, New Restaurant, & Record Temps

Several indoor events tonight!

TODAY’S WIND DOWN BROUGHT TO YOU WITH

Happy Monday Afternoon, Neighbor!

Wanna get naked? In these temps, who doesn’t, right? If you do feel like ripping your clothes off, you’ve got the right week for it - Nude Recreation Week to be exact. So, if you’ve ever dreamed of kayaking or hiking in the buff, it’s time to live the dream.

In less naughty news, if you’re interested in the Battle for Vegas charity softball game at Las Vegas Ballpark this Saturday, but haven’t secured your tickets yet, you can still get them.

And if you want to escape the heat in a less nude way, you might be interested in Lee Canyon’s Mountain Yoga on Fridays and Sundays. Like many great things, it’s free. You just have to sign up in advance.

TODAY’S HAPPY HOURS & EATS (BACK TO THE WEIRD STUFF)

Before we had lots of others things to talk about, we were talking about weird menu items at Happy Hours. We did dippin’ things. We did unusual egg rolls. Now, it’s time to talk bacon.

First up, at Lazy Dog, we’ve got Bacon Candy, which I’ve said before has to taste better than it sounds. But does it though? Because it sounds like something my nephew would have eaten when he was eleven. But it’s bacon, so, let’s be real, it probably IS delicious.

Then, up at Aces and Ales, we’ve got Bacon Bombs, which sounds less gross and more dangerous. Presumably these things are an explosion of flavor? I don’t know. But if just the idea of bacon makes you weep with ecstasy, both these things are probably worth a try.

  • Lazy Dog

  • Downtown Summerlin

  • 3-6 pm

  • Aces and Ales

  • Summerlin North

  • 4-6 pm

Bacon not your game? Check out our list of other Monday Happy Hours in the area.

Also, there’s another new restaurant coming to Boca Park. It’s called Ciao Vino, and I’ll let you guess what type of food they serve and whether or not they have wine.

DID YOU KNOW? 🧱

LEGO bricks are every bit as strong as they feel when you accidentally step on one in the middle of the night.

In fact, pound for pound, they are stronger than concrete.

So, just how does LEGO pull off this trick of microscopic foot torture?

LEGO bricks are made from a plastic called acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS). This stuff is not only durable and incredibly resistant to wear and tear, but it’s really, really strong. When it comes to withstanding pressure, LEGO bricks can endure up to 950 pounds of force before they start to deform. That's the equivalent of having a polar bear balance on tiptoe on a single brick.

Concrete starts to crack under about 3,000 pounds per square inch, or psi, of pressure. Which sounds like a lot until you scale things down. A concrete brick the same size as a LEGO brick can withstand about 750 pounds of pressure, 200 pounds less than a LEGO!

Start to stack, and the LEGO becomes even more of a powerhouse. In fact, LEGOs could be used to build an actual POWER HOUSE. The precise interlocking of LEGOs makes them super builders. A house of concrete-block-sized LEGOs would be stronger than a house made of standard concrete blocks, and it would hold up longer. That plastic used in LEGOs doesn’t degrade as quickly as concrete either.

So, why don’t we build entire cities of LEGO blocks? Apparently, scaling up to building-sized LEGOs would simply be too expensive, and that’s just how the concrete crumbles.

AROUND THE VALLEY 🤑

Here are some things Around the Valley we think might be of interest -

We’re in the Money? 💰

How much does it cost to live in Summerlin? Probably no surprise to many of you, more than it costs to live in much of Las Vegas. Which is probably why the Summerlin median income is higher than the median income of Vegas as a whole. The median income of a Summerlin household is just over $100,500, while the median income in Las Vegas is right around $68,300.

Summerlin also has a considerably higher number of college graduates, with over 30% of residents holding a bachelor’s degree or higher, compared to less than 13% of the residents of Las Vegas a whole.

We did it! 🥵

If you haven’t seen it yet, and are wondering if we beat those temperature records they predicted we’d beat this week, we did it!

The temperature yesterday hit 120° at 4 pm. That’s a full 3° higher than the record.

So, that’s good right? We beat the record. It has to get better from here.

Well, hold onto your ice packs, because we have the potential to beat the record again - yes, the one we just set yesterday - on Wednesday and Thursday.
