Did You Know? 🚶‍♂️

The average person walks around the world nearly four times in their lifetime. Well… the equivalent at least.

And that’s without trying to get in your 10,000 daily steps!

The Earth's circumference is roughly 24,901 miles, so if you multiply that by three, you're looking at approximately 74,703 miles of walking over the course of a lifetime. And all of this without ever having to leave your own neighborhood.

Here's the breakdown:

On average, a person walks just under 7,000 steps per day just doing their normal stuff - trudging to the bathroom, going to work, running errands, chasing the grandkids. Over the course of a year, that adds up to roughly 2.5 million steps.

The average stride length for a person is around 2.5 feet, so multiply that up and those 2.5 million steps translate to about 1,183 miles annually. Factor in the average lifetime of 79 years, and we’re talking 93,457 miles of walking, or roughly 3.75 trips around the globe!

Of course, these numbers are all based on averages, and averages are just that - average. Some people walk a lot more (talking to you small-town mail carriers) and some people walk a lot less. So, what happens if you actually aim for those prized 10,000 steps a day? Well, let’s do the math.

If you walk 10,000 steps daily, you're looking at around 4.73 miles per day. Multiply that by 365 days per year, and you're walking about 1,726 miles a year. Over an average lifetime of 79 years, that adds up to a whopping 136,389 miles of walking.

So, now instead of circling the globe three times, you'd be making about 5.5 trips around the planet. Impressive, right? Well, don’t get too excited.

Considering where we are, it’s probably important to note that the average American walks a whole lot less than the global average. Like by half. According to the Mayo Clinic, people in the U.S. only walk between 3,000 to 4,000 steps a day on average. That means the average American only traverses the world about 1.5 times in their lifetime. At that rate, the only way many of us are making it around the world twice is if we buy a plane ticket.

AROUND THE VALLEY (AND FRANCE) 🏀

Here are some things Around the Valley (and the last of the Olympics!) we think might be of interest -

Onto LA ☀️

The torch has been passed. Yesterday was the Closing Ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. In the end, the U.S. topped the overall medal count and tied with China in gold medals. Though, it was a nail-biter until the end.

Did you happen to catch that last women’s basketball game? I’m not normally a basketball watcher myself, but I happened to be making coffee when the game was on its last legs, and those last few seconds were INSANE! The U.S. literally won by half a foot, and I’m talking an actual, human foot, not a unit of measurement. In the final milliseconds, Gabby Williams of France sank a buzzer-beater that was a sight to behold, but just inside the three-point line, leaving France one point shy of catching the U.S. One point. At the buzzer. Half a foot. INSANE. I might just start watching basketball…

Flavor Flav Comes Through 👍

Did you miss the semi-feel-good story from the Olympics about Flavor Flav helping cover one Olympian’s rent? Veronica Fraley is a discus thrower from Nashville, Tennessee who mentioned on social media that she was worried about paying her rent… while at the Olympics. So, Flavor Flav, along with others, including Alexis Ohanian, covered her and then some.

I say “semi” feel-good, because I kinda think if you’ve made it to the pinnacle of a sport and are representing your country at the Olympics you shouldn’t have to worry about rent. But, hey, that’s just me.
