TODAYāS WIND DOWN BROUGHT TO YOU WITH
Happy Tuesday Afternoon, Neighbor!
Itās Left Handers Day, a day to celebrate all those lefties in your life. Or yourself, if youāre a lefty! While Iām not left-handed myself, thereās one product that Iām always surprised there are no left-handed versions of - cameras. š· Like I know this doesnāt really matter much anymore, since everyone has a smart phone camera, but as an old-school camera girl, I really feel for those left-handed photogs.

But itās also National Filet Mignon Day, and, if you want to celebrate, thereās only one place with a Happy Hour today and a little filet mignon on their Happy Hour menu. The Great Basin collared lizard can run on only its hind legs?
And while it's not the only lizard with this nifty trick up its scales, it's definitely part of an exclusive club.
If you ever come across a Great Basin collared lizard in the wild, (or on your own back patio), you might just see this little speedster take off like a mini-dinosaur, raring up T-Rex style and sprinting around on its back legs. When these lizards (Crotaphytus bicinctores, if you want to get fancy) need to make a quick getaway - whether it's from a predator or just to show off - they rise up onto their hind legs and book it. While this bipedal running may look like a fear response, itās actually biologically advantageous, giving these typical quadrupeds an extra burst of speed and balance, which can be crucial in the wild.
The back legs of the Great Basin collared lizard are stronger than its front legs, which means at a dead sprint their front legs can just become dead weight. So, instead of dragging those arms along, the lizards lift up to focus all their energy on their powerful hind legs. It's sort of like the animal kingdom's version of a turbo boost.
And the Great Basin collared lizard isn't alone in its two-legged sprints. Other lizards, such as the frilled-neck lizard of Australia and the basilisk lizard (a.k.a. the "Jesus lizard" that can run on water), share this skill.
So, just what kind of speed boost does this lizard turbo provide? Well, on two legs, the Great Basin collared lizard can reach speeds of up to 16 miles per hour. And, while that might not sound like much compared to, say, a cheetah, itās pretty darn fast for a creature that's only about a foot long!
AROUND THE VALLEY šŖ©
Here are some things Around the Valley we think might be of interest -
We Winā¦ Hottest (And Not in a Good Way) š„µ
The numbers are in from around the country, and we did, in fact, have the most days with above average temperatures this summer. Go us! To add to the scorching news, every day of July reached temps over 105 degrees, which Iām sure you noticed. And this is the new norm, soā¦ Yay, Vegas?
Now, for the betting. Just how long do you think it will take for Death Valley to beat its record temperature of 134Ā°F? Bakerās gonna have to build a new giant thermometer.
Get Electric With Doggos š¶
Ever wanted to rave with a bunch of puppers? I mean, who hasnāt had that dream? Well, The Animal Foundation is gonna make that dream come true. Next Monday, August 19, the Foundation is holding its first ever night-adoption Electric Doggy Carnival, featuring ice cream, glow sticks, doggos, and waived adoption fees. If youāve been looking for a funky four-legger, this is your chance to see which dogs can really get down.
