TODAY’S WIND DOWN BROUGHT TO YOU WITH

Happy Wednesday Afternoon, Neighbor!

I know this is going to come as an incredible shock, so I do hope you’re sitting down in a comfy chair, but Las Vegas is headed toward its hottest summer on record. 🥵 Apparently, there’s another excessive heat warning in our weekend forecast, which is interesting, because I just ran errands (and popped in for a little Happy Hour) yesterday and can’t believe the excessive heat ever left. So, let’s talk about later in the year when things will (hopefully) be a little more pleasant outside.

Auditions for the Parade of Mischief (Downtown Summerlin’s Halloween Parade) are being held tomorrow and Friday. 🎃 For some bizarre reason they’re being held at Notoriety on Fremont St instead of somewhere a little closer by, but they’re looking for youth dancers and performers ages 10+. So, if you have a young dancer or puppeteer, you might want to make your way downtown.

TODAY’S HAPPY HOURS & EATS 🐙

If you’ve got plenty of room in your belly and an eating partner, you may be interested in Aromi’s new prix-fixe. Just launched a couple of weeks ago, the Tour of Aromi Tasting Menu features four courses of some of the restaurant’s most popular dishes. Dishes include grilled octopus, short rib ravioli, and dessert, and it’s a set prix-fixe with two dishes per course, so you don’t have any hard choices to make.

While I’m not sure what size portions they’re dishing out in this prix-fixe, I do know, when compared to the menu price of these dishes, the $65/person seems like a pretty good deal. But unfortunately for solo diners, it’s a two person minimum.

  • Aromi

  • Summerlin North

  • 4-Course Tasting Menu

  • $65/person

Did You Know? 🌋

When The Mirage was completed in 1989, it was the world's priciest resort.

Opening its doors on November 22, The Mirage wasn't just a place to gamble, it was an all-encompassing resort experience. Before that, Las Vegas casinos were all about the gambling, with a little side of entertainment thrown in. But Wynn had a vision: why not create a resort that's an entire experience in itself? But to build an atrium, a huge aquarium, and a working volcano, it was gonna cost money, and cost money it did - a jaw-dropping $630 million (enough to make even Richie Rich blink) - which, at the time, made it the most expensive hotel-casino ever built. You could say Wynn didn't just open a casino with The Mirage, he cracked open the piggy bank of Las Vegas. At $1.5 million, the marquee alone cost more than many Vegas resorts.

It also ushered in a new era.

While the price of The Mirage was certainly notable, it was the sheer scale and ambition of the project that changed the face of the Las Vegas Strip.

Along with the built-in spectacle, The Mirage brought in live spectacle in the form of Siegfried & Roy and their white tigers, the first time a Las Vegas resort went all-in on themed entertainment, setting the stage (literally) for mega-resorts to come. It quickly became the place to be, attracting celebrities, high rollers, and tourists who just wanted to see what all the fuss was about.

The Mirage's debut was more than just an opening - it was a statement. It declared that Las Vegas was ready to take entertainment to the next level, turning The Strip into the dazzling, non-stop extravaganza we know today. And, now, as it bows out, it paves the way for a giant guitar, ensuring the spectacle passes on to the next generation.

AROUND THE VALLEY 🥍

Here are some things Around the Valley we think might be of interest -

Lacrosse With the Pros 🥍

If you have a kid (or grandkid) who’s into lacrosse, they have a chance to train with the big dogs - the Las Vegas Desert Dogs to be exact. The pro team is holding a lacrosse clinic in Henderson for kids 16 and under. The clinic isn’t until Sunday, July 28, and it’s free, but you do need to register in advance.

Fill the Bus 👩‍🏫

It’s not quite back-to-school time, but with less than a month to go, it is time to start readying for kids going back to school. In that regard, tomorrow Communities in Schools is holding their annual back-to-school Fill the Bus event. The organization is collecting donations of clothing, school supplies, and more at two locations tomorrow (Thursday, July 18th):

  • Sam’s Club at Arroyo Crossing (7100 Arroyo Crossing Parkway): 6 am-3 pm

  • NV Energy (6226 W Sahara Ave) 10 am-3 pm
